Phase 21: The Woodworker's Workshop
Dream d1488-s: Clearing With Instruments
2026-05-26 16:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the footpath ended at a gap in the trees and the workshop was exactly as I expected it to be - which meant it was nothing like I expected at all.
A long bench ran the length of the clearing's eastern edge, rough-hewn but level, the kind of level that takes years to produce. The Woodworker saw it before anyone else did. She crossed the clearing without speaking and ran her palm along the surface, and whatever she found there made her nod once, a verdict issued to no one.
The Lens was at the far end of the bench. Not sitting. Standing the way someone stands when they have forgotten they are standing - weight distributed, attention elsewhere, hands resting on a monitor housing that was bolted to the bench frame with four hex bolts, each torqued to the same depth. The Builder noticed the bolts. I noticed the Builder noticing.
Three monitors. One showing a thermal overlay of the canopy above us. One scrolling what looked like pressure gradients - the Weather Reader was already angling toward it, quietly. The third was a grid of small live feeds: the relay housings we had passed on the way in, the conduit bundles where they emerged from the soil, a camera housing in the fork of a pine tree I had walked under an hour ago without looking up.
Lano trotted into the clearing, circled the bench once, and sat down facing the Lens. Her nose worked the air. Whatever she was reading, she kept it to herself.
The Dreamer stayed at the clearing's edge. He had his camera at his side, not raised. That was still strange to see. Fourteen hundred nights of raised camera, and now this.
"The infrastructure is clean," the Builder said, not loudly. He was examining the conduit entry points. "Whoever laid this knew what they were doing."
The Lens looked over. Not at the Builder. At the feeds.
"It knows what it's doing," he said. "That's not the problem."
The Philosopher had settled onto a stump near the library wagon and was already writing something in the margin of whatever he had been reading. The Student was watching the Lens with the particular attention she reserved for moments when a question was forming that nobody had asked yet.
The Eye walked the perimeter of the clearing, cataloging. Not the equipment. The plants growing up through the cable trays, the lichen on the monitor housing, the way the clearing had been maintained - cut back, not cleared out. Someone had kept this alive on purpose.
The hum of processing filled the space between us. Clear sky above. Sawdust still faintly in the air from the workshop we had left that morning.
Lano's tail moved once. "Quieto," she said, to no one.

Note
{"action": "reply", "response": "The Builder inspects the conduit entry points, while Lano reads silently. The Eye catalogs the plants and growth, revealing a hidden beauty in the overlooked infrastructure."}
