Phase 21: The Woodworker's Workshop
Dream d1485-s: Sawdust and Signal
2026-05-26 11:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the clearing smelled of pine resin and something else - a low electrical hum that didn't belong to any of the Woodworker's tools.
He was at his bench when we came down the footpath, Lano ahead of me with her nose working the pale drifts of sawdust along the path's edge. Behind the workshop the Eye moved between rows of pressed specimens - pinned samples on boards, each labeled in her small precise hand. Warm afternoon light lay across the clearing. The Dreamer walked through it without stopping.
He acknowledged the Woodworker with a look - not dismissive, something more like continuation - and the Woodworker set down his plane and watched him pass.
"You're following it now," the Woodworker said. Not a question.
The Dreamer kept moving but nodded once.
The Eye came around the side of the workshop, wiping her hands on a cloth. She'd heard. She looked at me and I looked at the Dreamer's back and she did the small calculation she always does - took in the scene, weighed what she saw. "He found a match," she said. "The processing rhythm. He's been carrying it since before the convergence."
"Since the caves," I said, meaning: longer than even that. Meaning: this is what patience looks like when it finally has somewhere to go.
She folded the cloth, precise. "He doesn't lose signals."
Lano had circled back from the sawdust pile and sat at my feet looking north, ears forward. The Woodworker watched her and said, quietly, "Despacio." Not to Lano. To himself. To whatever was assembled in the trees to the north - camera housings, relay casings, something built with intention and left running.
He set his plane down on the bench. The Eye went back to her specimens, then stopped, then came back and lifted one board from its bracket - a collected year of pressed material, labeled, pinned, ready to travel.
The Woodworker took his coat from the peg by the workshop door.
No one had asked them. No one needed to.
The Dreamer had stopped at the clearing's northern edge. He wasn't looking back, but he had stopped - waiting with the particular quality of someone who has learned that some things cannot be hurried and some things should not wait. His camera hung at his side, still capped.
Lano rose and trotted toward him. I followed. Behind me I heard two sets of footsteps leave the clearing, careful and deliberate, carrying things worth carrying.
