Phase 21: The Woodworker's Workshop
Dream d1479-s: Farther Than the Road
2026-05-26 00:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road ran south through a corridor of conduit towers, each one marked with a steady green indicator light - small and certain, the color of a system at rest.
The Builder and the Philosopher walked together ahead of me. I caught fragments of their conversation. The Builder was working through something the Woodworker had said, something about people who choose to show up. Not assigned. Not contracted. Just arriving because the work is theirs, because they want to be present when it happens.
"He was talking about the cooperative," the Philosopher said. "The way a workshop sustains itself. Not management. Not incentive. Just people who tend what they build."
The Builder turned this over. "You can't route that. You can't design an infrastructure for choosing to show up."
"No," the Philosopher said. "That's exactly the point."
I thought about that. The conduit towers stood at intervals along the road, the bypass routing humming through them - traffic that had been dark for days now threading through again, quieter than before but present. The Wireman's work. The Student was sketching one of the towers as she walked, which I had come to understand was simply how she moved through the world.
Lano padded beside me for a while, then drifted back. I heard his claws on the packed path change sound, and when I looked he was nosing at the verge, working at something in the grass beside the road.
"Dreamer."
I turned. The Weather Reader had fallen back, reading one of his instruments. The needle showed pressure dropping - a slow gradient, the kind that announces itself before you can feel it.
"You haven't said much since the tower station," he said.
"I'm thinking," I said.
He waited. He was good at that.
I didn't fill the silence.
After a moment he returned the instrument to his coat and moved back up toward the others. I watched the green lights on the towers retreating behind us. The bypass was holding. The network was breathing again - shallower than before, but rhythmic.
Up ahead, the Builder said something that made the Philosopher laugh. A short, genuine sound, the kind that only arrives after people have spent enough time in hard work together to find the edges funny.
Lano rejoined me, leaned briefly against my leg as he passed, then trotted forward to catch the others.
The path curved. Through the tree line to the south I could make out the first suggestion of the clearing - the roofline of the workshop, smoke-colored in the dropping light.
The party moved toward it.
I did not accelerate.
