Phase 21: The Woodworker's Workshop
Dream d1453-s: Falling Without Weather
2026-05-24 14:19 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the oscilloscope traces were still wrong when I crossed to the Weather Reader's station. She had her back to the workshop floor, three instruments spread across a narrow bench, and the kind of focus that keeps a room quiet around it.
The barometer had been dropping for twelve minutes. She told me this without turning around.
"Wind?" I asked.
She shook her head. The anemometer was flat. The humidity gauges showed nothing moving. Outside the workshop windows the sky had the particular stillness of held breath, but she had already ruled the sky out.
The Philosopher leaned against the far wall, watching. The Builder had pulled a terminal from his pack and was running diagnostics quietly, fingers moving without hurry, occasional amber flickers on the screen catching the lamplight.
Lano had settled near the base of the bench, nose working the floor.
She moved through each instrument the way you work through a checklist when you already suspect the list will not help. Dew point, stable. Pressure gradient, no gradient - just uniform drop. She tapped the barometer face once, confirming it was not the instrument's fault, or possibly just annoyed with it. Elevation sensor, no reading she could argue with.
"Ruling out local front," she said, not to anyone in particular. "Ruling out elevation shift. Ruling out sensor fault." She paused at a small analog gauge and watched its needle for a count of ten, then added it to the ruled-out column.
The Dreamer stood at the oscilloscope station behind us. He had his notebook open, pen uncapped. He was not writing. He was watching the traces the way you watch something you have already understood and are not ready to say out loud.
The Builder said, flat and unhurried, "Cluster seven has gone amber. Cluster twelve now."
The Weather Reader picked up her largest barometer - brass case, mercury column, the one she trusts without question. She held it level and watched the mercury ignore her confidence.
She set it down carefully.
"It is not atmospheric," she said. "The pressure is dropping through the relay conduits."
She turned around then. The lamplight caught her face and she looked like someone finishing a calculation they had been hoping to get wrong.
