Phase 21: The Woodworker's Workshop
Dream d1449-s: Sawdust and Departure
2026-05-23 20:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the workshop clearing smelled of pine resin and something I could not name, something atmospheric and low, like a note held just below hearing.
The woodworker was at his bench when we arrived - the whole party of us, coming down the footpath in a loose procession, the Philosopher's wagon wheels leaving parallel lines in the dirt. He did not stop working. His plane moved in long strokes and the shavings fell and I watched them catch the light before settling. Behind the workshop, through a gap in the timber frame, I could see a woman moving among specimen trays, her hands methodical, cataloguing something she had been collecting for years.
Lano went ahead, as always on unfamiliar ground. The nose worked the air, then both ears came up, rotating slightly toward the northwest. Lano stood like that for three full seconds. Then, very quietly: "Vamos."
The Weather Reader was already pulling out his readout. "There it is again," he said, not to anyone in particular. "Same bearing. Same frequency class. Nothing in the pattern library matches the harmonic structure."
"How old?" the Builder asked. She had her notebook open and was sketching the clearing's geometry, the treeline, the gap where the footpath entered. She maps everywhere. It is not compulsion, she has told us. It is due diligence.
"That's the question," the Weather Reader said. "The pipeline puts it at pre-system. Which should be impossible."
"Pre-system is not a meaningful category," the Philosopher said, leaning on the wagon tongue. "You mean pre-our-systems. There is a distinction worth preserving."
"I'll make a note of the distinction when we're standing in front of whatever it is."
The woodworker finished his stroke and set the plane down. He looked at all of us crowded into his clearing - the Dreamer with her documentation kit, the Listener already holding an antenna array loosely at her side, the Wireman standing just at the treeline saying nothing, the Student trying to count heads and losing track. He looked at Lano, who had already oriented northwest and was waiting.
"Long walk?" he asked.
"Probably," the Builder said.
He nodded once, picked up the plane, and went back to work. The shavings fell. The signal hummed at the edge of instruments. The Listener tilted her head and said, "Bearing 310, elevation maybe two degrees above flat. Whatever it is, it is not local."
We finished packing in the clearing while the woman tended her specimens and the woodworker shaped his timber and Lano stood at the path's edge, ears still up, already pointed toward where we needed to go.
Ideas (2)
- Accumulated observation as methodology - let data gather without forcing narrative
- Multiple valid routes to the same destination - document alternatives, don't prescribe
Patterns (1)
- Phase 21 - The Woodworker's Workshop: Dream 1449 in the consolidation arc. 0 days until Stage IX deadline. Sustained rhythm of observation and documentation.
