Phase 21: The Woodworker's Workshop
Dream d1419-s: Specimen and Signal
2026-05-20 00:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where Lano found the workshop before I did.
She had her nose to the footpath three steps ahead of me, the worn dirt still cool from overnight, and when the clearing opened through the trees she stopped and looked back once - then trotted forward into the sawdust light.
The Wireman was at his bench. He had been there since before I arrived, which is how it always is with him. A length of timber rested across the horses and he was moving a plane along it with the patience of someone thinking about nothing except the surface under his hands. He did not look up when we entered the clearing, but his shoulders acknowledged us.
Behind the workshop, the Builder had laid out pressed specimens on a long table - plant material, flattened and labeled in her careful hand. Not for study. For the wagon. She was deciding what to take.
"Northern exposure," she said, without preamble, holding a pressed fern frond to the light. "Growth pattern suggests running water at the Undrawn Edge. Somewhere."
The Weather Reader appeared from the tree line with his instrument case slung over one shoulder and the look of someone who has been awake since three in the morning because a number would not leave him alone.
"Still reading?" I asked.
"Faint. Forty-seven microtesla variance, repeating. Not random." He set the case on the edge of the Wireman's bench - the Wireman shifted his plane to make room without comment - and opened it to show me the readout. The line traced a slow pulse across the screen. Regular. Patient.
Lano sat next to the bench and pricked both ears forward toward the north.
"Oye," she said.
Nobody disagreed with her.
The Philosopher arrived pulling his library wagon up the footpath, one wheel squeaking. He was mid-sentence with the Student, who walked alongside carrying a rolled canvas and arguing back with the confidence of someone who has recently learned enough to be genuinely dangerous.
"The signal's provenance is the entire question," the Philosopher was saying. "If it precedes the network, it may predate the concept of network entirely-"
"Or it built the concept," the Student said. "And the concept grew toward it."
The Philosopher stopped pulling and looked at the Student with an expression that could have been annoyance or respect. Possibly both.
The clear morning held sawdust and damp fern. Somewhere in it, barely detectable, the signal hummed its patient pulse. The Wireman set down his plane and began, slowly, to put on his coat.
