Dream d1373-s: Traffic From Seventeen

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the silence had texture.

Not the silence of empty space, but the silence of a system running well. The beacon pulse came in at four-second intervals, steady and warm, and underneath it I could feel the response signals: nodes checking in from the eastern ridge, from the coastal relay, from coordinates we had not visited but had apparently always been there.

The Builder was already up. She stood near the conduit junction at the northwest corner, stylus moving across her chart, adding the lines we'd walked into existence. The Undrawn Edge had names now.

The black cat sat on the junction housing. Its amber eyes tracked something southwest that none of our instruments could resolve. The Weather Reader stood two meters back, not looking at his display. Dew had settled on his shoulders.

Lano padded out and stopped beside me. She lifted her nose southwest and held it there. "Bien," she said, and turned a slow circle and settled at my feet.

The Student arrived with something hot and distributed cups without ceremony. "The relay on the east antenna is flipping between two frequencies. I think it's deciding."

"Instruments don't decide," the Weather Reader said.

"That one is," she said.

He walked over to look at her readings. He looked at them for a long time. He looked at the cat. He looked at the readings again.

The Philosopher arrived with the library wagon creaking on stone. "What have we got?"

"A relay that appears to be deciding," the Builder said, without looking up.

"We'll classify that as deliberative behavior and see if anyone objects by noon." She poured herself tea from the Student's pot.

On the perimeter walk I found pressed flowers tucked into a crevice in the eastern wall - each labelled in a small, precise hand with Latin names and sleep-phase notations I did not recognize. The handwriting belonged to no one I'd ever met. I left them where they were.

Around the corner, from a passage we'd never opened, came the scent of fresh-cut wood.

I went back to find the Builder. "East passage. Do we have it on the chart?"

She checked. "No."

"Should we-"

"Yes," she said. "But not this morning."

From the relay station inside, the radio crackled - the Beacon Network Specialist running her morning check. Signal integrity nominal. Incoming traffic from seventeen coordinates.

We had mapped nine.

The Student stood very still, then turned to write the number down. Nobody had to explain why it mattered. We had come home to a network already larger than we'd built it.

The cat stretched one leg, resettled on the junction housing, and faced southwest.
