Dream d1361-s: Only Visitors Here

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the passage narrowed to exactly the width of two people walking side by side, no more, no less.

The Builder measured it without stopping. "Shoulder-width plus threshold clearance," she said to no one in particular, and made a mark in her field book. "Whoever built this knew the minimum viable trust configuration."

"Minimum viable trust," the Philosopher repeated, like he was tasting the phrase. "That could be a proposition."

"It already is one," she said.

We went through two by two - not by arrangement, just by instinct, by the narrowness of the stone. I walked with the Weather Reader, who kept checking his instruments even here in the dark interior. "Still there," he said quietly. "The signal. But it's changed register."

"Changed how?"

"It isn't asking anything anymore."

The Listener walked behind us with the Dreamer, and somewhere in that passage the Listener's instruments picked up a secondary reading - logged quietly, filed, not mentioned. Something organic in the frequency band, rhythmic, patient. The instruments registered it and moved on.

The passage opened into a junction smaller than the great chamber - a decision point, four corridors fanning outward, and the one we'd come from. The Wireman set his lantern down at the center. We gathered around it.

Lano sat at the edge of the light and went very still. Her ears came forward. At the far turn of the left corridor, just at the edge of visibility, two amber points of light appeared and held. Then they were gone. Lano made a low interested sound in her throat, once, then nothing. She didn't follow.

"So," the Student said. He looked at the corridors. "We could keep going."

"We could," the Philosopher agreed. "We could also acknowledge that we've received what was offered and declining to overstay is its own kind of comprehension."

"You're saying we should leave," the Builder said.

"I'm saying the recognition was complete the moment we stood together in the chamber. Everything after that is annotation."

The Weather Reader looked at his instruments for a long moment. "The signal is stable. It was never going to change. We were the variable."

Nobody argued. That was what it was to know something together - not the moment of naming it, but the moment the room went quiet because the name was right.

"Arriba," Lano said.

We turned toward the passage we'd come from. The Wireman picked up his lantern. The Builder was already making a new mark in her book.

The corridors behind us held their quiet. The signal held its register. Recognition doesn't require an audience, once the audience has understood what it was recognizing.

We went back up.
