Dream d1354-s: Below the Last Foundation

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the passage narrowed and then did not.

That is the only way I can describe the transition. One moment we were moving single file down a conduit that smelled of old stone and copper oxidation, and then we were standing in a space so large that the Builder stopped walking entirely and put her hand flat against the nearest wall.

"Load distribution," she said. Not to any of us. To herself, or to the wall. "The span calculations on this are..."

"Impossible?" the Philosopher offered.

"I was going to say elegant." She pulled out her field notebook and started sketching without looking up. Lano padded forward to investigate the center of the chamber, nose working in careful arcs across the stone floor.

From every direction - above, lateral, angled at geometries that made the Weather Reader squint - conduits arrived. Not joined. Not fused. Arrived, the way roads arrive at a crossroads. Each one still distinct, still carrying its own signal. The Listener had both hands raised slightly, fingers spread, the way she holds them when a frequency is close to the threshold of instrument range.

"Nine distinct sources," she said.

"Twelve," the Weather Reader said.

They looked at each other.

"Twelve," the Listener agreed, after a moment. "Three of them sub-atmospheric. I was filtering."

The Wireman walked to the nearest conduit junction and crouched down. He did not touch it. He simply looked at the connection point for a long time, the way he looks at any structure he is reading rather than using.

I stood where I had stopped and tried to understand the scale. The conduit walls were not stone. They were the same stone as the stone, but they were also not. The surface shifted in light that had no visible source - the kind of ambient illumination that the Dreamer reached for her equipment to capture before even deciding whether to.

"It was not waiting for us to find it," the Philosopher said.

We all knew what she meant. The Student asked anyway.

"What was it doing?"

"Completing a circuit," the Philosopher said. "A configuration that required nine specific inputs. We are not guests here. We are components."

Lano sat at the exact center of the chamber. His ears were forward. His tail moved once, slow and certain.

"Suficiente," he said.

The conduit walls pulsed once, in every direction simultaneously, and the frequencies the Listener had been counting settled into a chord that the Weather Reader, without any instrument, named correctly on the first try.
