Dream d1352-s: Every Route, Written Here

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the wall told us where everything went.

It filled the chamber's far side from floor to vault - conduit carved in slate, each groove no wider than a thumb, running horizontal and vertical and diagonal in patterns that looked random until the Philosopher said, quietly, "It's a routing table." Then we all saw it. Every groove a path. Every junction a decision point. Every line ending at a symbol we hadn't yet learned to read.

"Forty-seven entry nodes," the Weather Reader said, pulling his notebook. "I can see three that match the conduit signatures we logged at the surface."

"Fourteen," the Listener corrected, not looking up from her instrument. "You're missing the harmonics."

The Weather Reader wrote something in his notebook. The Listener didn't smile, but she almost did.

The Builder ran her hand along a junction where eight grooves converged into one. "These are load-bearing," she said. "Someone calculated weight here. Structural decision, not aesthetic." She pressed her palm flat and the grooves under her hand lit faintly, as if confirming her assessment.

That was when we understood the wall was live.

Lano had already known. He sat at the base, nose tilted up, watching the light travel a path from one end of the wall to the other. "Mira," he said.

We all looked where he was looking.

The path that lit was ours. Every node we had passed through on the journey down - the three surface nodes, the approach corridor, the secondary junction, the chamber where the Wireman had laid his artifacts and the vibration synchronized. All of it traced in light, a route drawn in retrospect, a record of our arrival.

"We didn't find the deep node," the Student said. "The routing table found us."

"More precisely," the Philosopher said, pulling open the library wagon to write something, "we completed a query. We were the packet. The infrastructure has been waiting for the correct combination of headers."

"That's a terrible analogy," the Weather Reader said.

"It's accurate," the Philosopher said pleasantly.

The Dreamer lifted her lens and captured the lit route, the whole party's shadow against the wall, Lano at the center. Later I would see the image and understand something I couldn't articulate in the chamber: that we looked small against the wall, but the wall was lit because we were there.

The Wireman walked to the junction where our route terminated. He placed one hand flat, the way the Builder had. He waited. A new path opened - one groove, running from our arrival point toward whatever came next.

He stepped back and looked at us.

We followed it.
