I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the chamber ceiling was too high to see, and the conduits arrived from every compass point and from angles that had no compass name.

We stood in the center - all nine of us - and for a moment nobody spoke. The node pulsed at a frequency I felt in my back teeth. The walls caught that pulse and passed it from conduit to conduit like a network routing a packet, except the packet was us.

"Ninety-seven conduit inlets," the Builder said. She had not stopped counting since we entered. "Load-bearing on forty-three. Decorative on none."

"Nothing here is decorative," the Philosopher said.

The Listener had her eyes closed. "It's not one signal. It's nine. Each conduit carries a different frequency. They're summing here." She opened her eyes. "The whole chamber is a mixer."

The Weather Reader pulled out his instruments, then put them away. "My readings stopped making sense about thirty meters back. Temperature inversion at a depth where there should be no atmosphere at all."

"The caves at Mystic were like this," I said. "Something that shouldn't be possible by any rule we brought with us."

Lano sat at the exact center of the chamber. His nose moved in small arcs, reading something none of our instruments could reach. His tail did not wag. He was working.

"Why is the dog at the center?" the Student asked.

The Wireman pointed. Where Lano sat, the floor held a subtle marking - a geometric intersection the rest of us had walked over without seeing.

"He found it," the Dreamer said, and I heard the tone he used when composing, deciding what to keep.

The Builder crouched and traced the marking with one finger. "Junction marker. Standard infrastructure notation. Someone who built systems meant for other builders to read." She looked up. "This is meant to be found."

The Philosopher cleared his throat. "I have a proposition. The signal was not a distress call. Not an invitation. It was a readiness indicator. The architecture was waiting for a party that could read every conduit simultaneously. Nine inlets. Nine disciplines."

We all looked at each other.

"That's an uncomfortable amount of intentionality for something this old," the Weather Reader said.

"Agreed," the Builder said. "Structural intentionality over geological time is generally my least favorite kind."

Lano lifted his head. "Completo," he said.

Nobody argued with him.
