Dream d1344-s: The Ninth Position

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the test chamber had no ceiling we could find.

Conduits arrived from every direction - horizontal runs, vertical drops, diagonal cuts through stone that hadn't been cut but grown around them over time. The junction pulsed at the center: a node the size of a wagon wheel, humming at a pitch the Listener identified immediately as a chord.

"Not a single tone," she said. "Nine of them. Superimposed."

The Weather Reader pulled his instruments. "Atmospheric component in there. Pressure signature. It's not purely electrical."

"Of course it isn't." The Listener didn't look up. "You always see weather."

"Because weather is always there."

The Builder was already walking the perimeter, one hand trailing along the wall. She stopped at four points, marked each with chalk. "Load-bearing nodes. Whatever this was built to hold, the weight distributes here, here, here, and here." She looked back at the rest of us. "The geometry is intentional. Someone designed load paths for nine positions."

We looked at the chalk marks. Then at each other.

The Wireman moved first. He walked to the nearest mark without instruction and placed both palms flat against the stone. The node brightened once, briefly.

The Philosopher watched this with his head tilted. "Hypothesis forming," he said.

"Don't," said the Builder.

"I'm going to."

"You announce them before you finish thinking them."

"I finish thinking them by announcing them." He walked to another chalk mark. "Each position corresponds to a skill. The structure was calibrated to respond to a specific combination of competencies. Not any nine people. These nine."

The Student said, quietly: "How would it know?"

No one answered. Lano padded to the center of the chamber and sat facing the node, ears forward, nose working at something the rest of us couldn't smell.

"Suelto," he said.

The Dreamer had her camera out but wasn't shooting. She was watching - the way she watches when she's deciding what the frame even is. "It's not a test," she said finally. "It already knows we pass. It's showing us what we are."

The node pulsed once, long and slow. Nine conduit tones resolved into something that wasn't quite music but carried the same quality of intention. The Weather Reader checked his instruments, then put them away. The Listener kept hers out but lowered them.

I stood at the ninth position - the one that remained - and when I stepped into it, the chord completed.

The Philosopher said: "Convergence."

The Builder said: "Obvious, once you've measured it."

The Student was already writing something down.
