Dream d1340-s: No Origin Recorded

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the camp we made on the return side of the divide was four tents, a fire ring, and the Weather Reader's instrument array balanced on a folding table that had not been designed for field use. The Builder had pointed that out when she assembled it. She had pointed it out again at dinner. The Weather Reader had not acknowledged either observation.

All three groups were back. The Philosopher and I had arrived first with Lano, carrying notes from the cliff library. The northeast team came twenty minutes later, the Builder with her maps rolled under one arm and the Student still talking, describing conduit diameter in terms that kept escalating. The east team arrived last, the Wireman saying nothing but carrying something wrapped in cloth that he set beside the fire without opening it.

We ate and shared and argued. The Philosopher called the integration node a semantic index for physical phenomena. The Builder said that was a long way to say junction box. The Weather Reader said both of them were wrong. The Listener said none of them had been at the ceremony circles and therefore none of them should be making structural claims.

Lano sat at the edge of the firelight, ears up, watching the dark outside the circle.

Then the radio crackled.

The Beacon Network Specialist's voice came through with that particular flatness she uses when she is not yet certain how alarmed to be. "I have something on the receivers," she said. "Pattern unrecognized. Not on any registry I have. I need one of you to confirm you're seeing this on your end."

The Weather Reader was already at his instruments. I watched his face in the lamp light. He checked three readings, then checked them again.

"I have it," he said. "It is not from the nodes we found. It is not from anything we mapped."

The Listener pressed her headphones tighter. "Origin?"

"No origin recorded."

Lano barked once, sharp and flat, then went still. She did not look at the fire. She looked outward into the unmapped territory, ears flat against her skull, nose working.

"Escucha," she said.

We all listened. The signal was already in the atmosphere, measurable, present, pushing against the edge of what we had built. Our infrastructure had not been designed to receive this. Every instrument we carried was calibrated to a different kind of problem.

We did not yet know if that mattered, or how much.
