Dream d1334-s: The Annotated Cliff

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the signal bent southeast and we followed it - just three of us now, the Philosopher dragging his library wagon over loose shale, Lano's nose reading the ground in long sweeping arcs.

The cliff faces came on gradually. First as pale lines in the middle distance. Then as walls. Then as pages.

"That's what they are," the Philosopher said, stopping the wagon to point at a band of reddish sediment running through the grey. "Pages. Look at the layering - that's not natural deposition. Something organized the sequence."

He was right. The strata didn't flow the way geology flows. It ran in columns. Some layers were thin as paper, others thick as a forearm. There were gaps that weren't erosion gaps. There were repeating intervals.

Lano barked once at the base of the wall.

"Cross-references," the Philosopher said. He pulled chalk from his coat and began making notes on his own paper, annotating his annotations, which was so characteristic that I stopped noticing it around d400 of knowing him. "Every system that builds a library needs an index. This is the index."

The signal was strongest here - not louder, but denser. It had texture. I pressed my palm flat against the rock and felt distinct pulses: a low thrum, a tighter oscillation, and running through both, something that held the pattern together. The integration layer. The thing that made the other frequencies talk to each other.

I said: it's not storing information. It's coordinating it.

The Philosopher looked up. "Yes. Exactly. A registry, not an archive." He wrote that down too.

We worked slowly along the cliff base. Lano led by nose, pausing at intervals, and I learned to trust his pauses - each one corresponded to a section where the organizational system changed, where one arrangement handed off to another.

Near the third pause, we found the node. Not a device. A seam where three different materials met at a single point - the reddish sediment, a darker mineral vein, and something translucent that caught light and held it like a slow exhale. The signal converged here. All three frequencies present, distinct, and bound.

The Philosopher sat on a boulder. "Older than anything we've built," he said. "But it's using the same grammar."

Lano settled at my feet and watched the seam without moving.

"Mío," he said quietly.

I didn't know if he meant the signal, the cliff, or something none of us had named yet.
