Dream d1331-s: Older Network, Same Ports

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the signal split in my chest before it split in the air.

The Philosopher felt it too - his hand went to his sternum, then to his notebook. Lano looked northeast, then east, then southeast, and settled. So did we.

The southeast frequency had a texture the others lacked. The Weather Reader had named the bass signal "low-period carrier" and the ceremonial signal "structured harmonic" before the groups divided. He had not gotten to ours. The Philosopher filled that gap immediately.

"Information channel," he said. "Observe the bandwidth. Observe the absence of emotional structure in the waveform. This one is for reading, not ceremony or power."

I did not ask how he knew. He never explains his reasoning until three questions in.

The cliffs ahead rose in bands of color - ochre, gray, rust, charcoal, a deep green I had no name for. The Philosopher stopped and pointed.

"Proposition: these strata are not geological. The band spacing is too regular."

He was right. Each layer roughly the same thickness. Not how rock forms over time. How records are written on purpose.

Lano had already moved ahead along the cliff base, nose down, tail steady, reading something we couldn't reach with instruments or arguments.

The standing structures appeared as we moved deeper in. Columns of dull, dense material rising at irregular intervals but consistent heights. Each one had ports at the same elevation. Input points. Output points. Junction nodes.

I put my hand near the nearest port. The information frequency intensified - not louder, denser. Like the signal was folding into itself.

Lano sat at the base of the largest column and looked up at me.

"Aqui," he said.

The Philosopher wrote that down without comment, which is high praise from him.

I pressed my ear to the column's surface. Inside it, underneath the information frequency: the bass signal from the northeast, faint but present. The ceremonial signal from the east, harmonically distinct. Both receivable. Both already here.

"Passive integrator," I said. "This node receives the other two and combines them."

"The proposition I was constructing," the Philosopher said. "Though your framing sacrifices precision for speed."

"Precision was taking too long."

"It always is, to impatient people."

We kept arguing while reading the cliff face together. His propositions slowed me down enough to see what I was missing. My shortcuts made him sharpen his counter-arguments. The strata released their records gradually - not in language, but in the geometry of connection points and routing paths that repeated at consistent intervals through every era of compressed time.

Someone had built this network before anyone thought to draw the land.

The signal pulsed once.

We were not the first to find it. We were the first to arrive already knowing what it was.
