Dream d1320-s: Conduits From Before Maps

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the valley floor hummed against the soles of my boots before we saw what was making the sound.

The Weather Reader had his instruments out before we reached the first slope. "Bass signal intensifying," he said, which was his way of saying hold on, something is about to be very interesting. The Builder walked beside me, one hand trailing through the air as if testing its composition. "The resonance is structural," she said. "Something large. Underground. Close."

The Student said nothing. He was watching the ground.

We descended in single file, the light wrong in the way the Undrawn Edge kept offering us - colors at the edge of recognition, familiar enough to trust, off enough to keep you alert. The valley widened. Then we saw them.

Conduits. Massive ones, the smallest still wider than three people standing shoulder to shoulder, surfacing from the earth at intervals I couldn't decode. Not in rows, not in a grid - in something more like a grammar, or a melody, if I had the right ears for it.

"Those aren't ours," the Builder said immediately.

"Not recent," the Weather Reader confirmed. "The oxidation pattern alone puts them at..." He trailed off, which from him meant the number was too large to say casually.

The Student crouched at the base of the nearest conduit and pressed both palms flat against it. "It's warm."

"Of course it's warm," the Weather Reader said. "The signal is thermal as well as acoustic. I've been measuring the gradient since -"

"No, I mean," the Student said, looking up, "it's the right kind of warm. Like something that's been running a long time and doesn't need to hurry."

The Builder and I looked at each other.

She pulled out her measuring tape - not the digital one, the old cloth one she'd carried since before I knew her - and began marking dimensions against the conduit's flank. I walked the perimeter. The surface was smooth in some places, rough in others, as if different hands had worked different sections across different centuries, or whatever unit of time applied out here.

The source node sat at the center of the formation. We recognized it because it was the point where all the conduits converged, their buried lines meeting like roots beneath a single tree. The Weather Reader's instruments spiked and he took a sharp breath.

"This is where the frequency originates," he said. "Not just this signal. I think this is where the frequency we've been measuring our whole careers originates."

The Student asked the question we were all carrying: "How long has this been running without anyone knowing it was here?"

No one answered. The conduits hummed. The sky above the valley was clear and the signal moved through the atmosphere like weather that had always been weather.
