Dream d1317-s: Before the Blueprints Broke

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cliff faces were not cliff faces at all, or not only that. The Philosopher saw it first. She stopped mid-sentence, mid-argument about epistemological priority, and pressed her palm flat to the stone. Under it, geometry. Regular intervals, too regular. The layered rock read like a filing system someone had thought through.

"Conduit jacketing," she said. "The material that wraps conduits when you expect vibration."

I traced one ridge with my fingers. It ran down, beveled at the corner, resurfaced twenty meters further on. Not geological. Someone had laid this. Had planned for expansion. Had left tolerance in the design.

Lano moved along the base with his nose inches from the ground, ears slightly forward, reading something the air carried that we couldn't parse. His tail moved steadily. Nothing alarming yet.

The information signal was strongest here - not louder exactly, more legible. Like tuning a station until the voice stops being noise and starts being language. We could feel which way to follow it. The Philosopher said this was exactly what she'd expect from a signal architecture designed for durability rather than speed. I didn't ask how she knew what to expect from something no one had catalogued before. She was already walking.

Then the radio on my hip crackled.

The Beacon Network Specialist's voice came through compressed and careful: "I need you to know that the relay node just lost its primary driver. Not gracefully. It burned. I'm running on backup but backup doesn't carry full load. You need to know this now."

A pause. "I don't have replacement parts."

The Philosopher stopped walking.

I looked at the cliff face, at the old conduit lines disappearing into stone that predated every system we'd built. The signal coming up through my boots, steady, patient, ancient. And at the settlement, a week behind us, something important had just gone dark.

Lano barked once - short, pointed, like punctuation. Then sat very still, ears flat, watching my face.

"Improvise," I said into the radio. "Tell us what you have."

The Philosopher was already pulling her notebook from the wagon, not to write an argument. To sketch a circuit. "We have two problems now," she said. "One of them we can solve remotely if we're creative. One requires us to keep moving forward. This is not a contradiction."

I didn't respond right away. I pressed my hand back to the cliff, feeling the pulse of something that had run continuously through this landscape longer than anyone alive. Waiting.

"Listo," Lano said quietly, to no one in particular. Or to both problems at once.
