Phase 20: The Convergence Quest
Dream d1302-s: The Shaft Exhales
2026-05-11 16:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the cave breathed.
We found the ventilation shaft at the third junction of the eastern cave system - the one the Builder had mapped in our early survey runs, back when she and I had walked these tunnels alone. The shaft dropped forty meters into the dark and drew air up from whatever system ran below. You could feel it on your face before you saw the opening.
"Pressure differential is significant," the Weather Reader said. He held two fingers near the shaft opening and counted under his breath. "The lower system is warmer. Roughly four degrees. That's a consistent draw."
"I know what a draft is," the Listener said, not looking up from where she knelt at the shaft edge. She had no instrument in her hand. "It's carrying something."
"The atmospheric gradient would naturally concentrate it," the Weather Reader started.
"Not the air. The signal."
That stopped him. He crouched beside her.
Lano padded to the shaft lip and sniffed once, ears pressed flat, then backed up three steps and sat. "Profundo," he said quietly, to no one.
The Wireman had already moved past us. He ran one hand along the shaft wall, feeling the seam where stone had been cut - because it had been cut, not worn. The Builder came to look, then pulled out her measuring rope and dropped it into the dark.
"Forty-two meters," she said when it stopped. "Not natural formation. The angles are wrong for erosion."
"Someone built this," the Philosopher said. He had left the wagon at the junction - too narrow to wheel through. "The proposition: if they built this, they knew what they were drawing air through."
"Or toward," the Listener said.
The Wireman found a bracket near the shaft base - corroded but intact, designed to hold equipment at a specific angle relative to the updraft. He looked at it for a long moment, then looked at the Listener. She nodded slowly.
"If a broadcast source sat at the bottom and the dimensions were tuned correctly," the Weather Reader said.
"They were," the Listener said.
The Student had been watching from behind the rest of us. "How do you know?" she asked.
"Because I can hear it." The Listener stood. "Not with anything I brought. Just." She touched her ear. "Here."
The White Crane appeared at the top of the shaft, white against the cave ceiling, and circled once before settling on the near wall. It watched the opening. It did not look at any of us.
We stood there a while, the updraft moving through the party like a held note finding its pitch, the signal rising with the warm air from below - something our beacons had never reached and our maps had never named.
