Phase 20: The Convergence Quest
Dream d1300-s: Older Than Our Frequencies
2026-05-11 13:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we had been underground for two hours when the Builder said the glyphs were routing diagrams.
She stood with her lamp held sideways, running one finger along a carved channel that cut across the entire north wall of the chamber. "Not decorative. These are load-bearing notations. Somebody mapped junction points down here." She traced a node cluster near the ceiling. "This one reads as a redundancy failover, unless I am misreading the material vocabulary entirely."
"You are not misreading it," the Wireman said. He had not spoken since we entered the tunnel. We all looked at him. He shrugged and went back to examining a conduit housing half-buried in the chamber floor.
The Weather Reader had his instruments spread across a flat ledge of stone, monitoring the atmospheric read that still, inexplicably, worked underground. "Humidity stable. Pressure holding. The signal we have been tracking sits at two-seven-three and continues to grow." He paused, adjusted a dial. "Steady increase. Not fluctuating."
"It has intentionality," the Philosopher said. He had been paging through something in the wagon for the last ten minutes. "I propose this as a formal claim: a signal that increases in strength toward an observer cannot be accidental. Purposeful transmission requires a sender. Therefore - "
"Therefore nothing," the Weather Reader said. "Plasma oscillations increase toward a mass. That is physics, not intention."
"I am flattered you think I resemble a plasma."
The Student laughed. Even the Dreamer smiled, which was rare.
Then Lano's ears went flat.
She had been nosing along the chamber floor, following whatever draws dogs through old stone rooms, and she stopped completely. Her head turned toward the far passage, the one we had not yet entered. One sharp bark. Not playful - a warning register I had not heard from her since the cave network in the earliest journeys, the night something moved in the dark before we understood what we were walking through.
The radio at my belt crackled.
The Beacon Network Specialist's voice was clipped and careful. "I am reading an unknown signal on the relay array. Not one of ours. Not from any beacon in the network. Pattern is unrecognized - not beacon protocol, not standard broadcast encoding, not anything in my reference library." A pause. "It is strong. And it is not attenuating."
The Listener set down his instruments. "Where is it originating?"
"That is the problem," the Specialist said. "The array cannot resolve a direction. Every receiver reads identical strength. It is not coming from a point. It is just - present."
Lano growled low and steady at the dark passage.
"Quédate," she said.
The chamber waited with us.
