Dream d1277-s: Still Casting

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Student crouched at the edge of a dead root shelf and held up something small between two fingers.

"Pellet," she said. Not as a question.

The Wireman leaned over her shoulder. "An owl pellet. There's more - three, four, here." He swept his light along the shelf. Small gray oblongs, compressed, intact. Old but not ancient. Weeks, not months.

The Student began pulling them apart with careful hands, laying the components - small bones, fragments of fur, a beetle casing - on a piece of cloth. Mapping the owl's recent diet. Evidence of continued metabolism. Evidence of life.

Lano had found the pellets first. He was standing three meters ahead on the trail, ears forward and rigid, nose working the still air with tight rapid movements.

"Calido," he said, and kept walking.

The Listener was on her knees near the conduit wall, equipment pressed flat against the stone. She had been adjusting her instruments for the last ten minutes, working the frequency range downward in careful increments. "There's something below the threshold I was using. Long period. Very slow oscillation." She looked up. "Breath, maybe. Or something breathing-adjacent."

I knew this passage. The Color Caves had run through here - not these specific conduit walls, but this same deep geography, this stratigraphy of root and stone and carved channel. Lano and I had walked through synesthetic chambers where amber light had a texture you could feel on the back of your teeth. Now the walls were just walls. But I put my hand flat against the stone and felt the faintest warmth, a residual conduction from something deeper.

"It's been maintaining something," I said.

The Philosopher looked up from a faded inscription on the conduit arch. "The carving here stops mid-word. As if the carver intended to return."

"Or got interrupted," the Builder said. He was sketching the conduit junction ahead, three passages branching into darkness. "Structural integrity holds in all three, but the central bore shows higher thermal differential. Something generating heat. And the Quest signal is still pulling northeast - same bearing as the thermal."

Lano had already chosen the center passage. He stood at its entrance, tail low and still, head pointed into the dark with total attention.

The Student finished her cloth-laid record, photographed it, then rolled the cloth carefully and tucked it away. "The most recent casting is maybe two weeks old. Whatever's in there has been eating."

The Listener pulled her equipment from the wall and stood. "I'm following that frequency."

I remembered the owl's words from Phase 10, spoken when I thought I was leaving these Gardens for good. You will carry the Gardens with you now. I had carried them for over a thousand dreams. And here I was, carrying them back.

We entered the center passage. The warmth increased with every step.
