Dream d1259-s: Both Facing Northeast

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we gathered at the northeast gate before dawn had fully committed to being day.

The gate was functional architecture: two vertical posts of welded conduit, a crossbeam the Builder had plumbed twice and then a third time, because twice is measurement and three is truth. A signal repeater bolted to the right post showed amber in the gray morning air.

The Weather Reader stood closest to the gate, tablet angled away from glare that wasn't there yet. "Faint but consistent," he said. "Whatever it is, it doesn't drift the way interference drifts."

The Listener was running leads to a portable array on a folding table she'd carried from the workshop, headphones around her neck. "He means it's not background noise," she said, without looking up. "I mean it's a carrier. Something's riding underneath."

"Those are different claims," the Philosopher said.

"Both true," the Listener said.

Lano sat at the threshold, ears fully forward, nose working the northeast wind. She didn't bark. Just that particular stillness that meant she had already decided something and was waiting for the rest of us to arrive at the same conclusion.

The Student watched her. "She hears it?"

"She smells it," the Builder said, rolling up the first section of her hand-drawn map - our own territory, no longer needed. "Dogs don't distinguish signal from scent. It all arrives through the same door."

The Philosopher wrote something in his notebook.

The Wireman had finished loading the equipment wagon before anyone else arrived. He stood by the crane's ground anchor checking a connector with his thumbnail. Not fixing. Verifying. He did this the way other people breathed.

The Dreamer moved along the interior of the gate, photographing the repeater, the plumb marks on the posts, Lano's silhouette against the open northeast. She always photographed the departure.

The crane arrived on the crossbeam without drama. It folded into stillness and looked northeast, same direction as Lano. Two different kinds of knowing, same compass heading.

I stood with my pack on and watched all of it. The Beacon Network Specialist's voice came through on the settlement radio: "Instruments packed? Relay frequencies logged?" The Weather Reader and Listener both said yes at the same moment, then looked at each other.

Then the Student asked the question nobody had asked: "What do we do when we find it?"

The silence that followed was not uncertain. It was generous.

Lano turned toward the northeast and said: "Vamos."

We went.
