Dream d1257-s: Eight on the Road

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we gathered in the projection pavilion for the last time before going.

The Dreamer had rigged a final sequence on the curved wall - our instruments' data rendered as light, the signal anomaly shown as a pale thread pulling northeast. It was faint enough that you could look at it and almost convince yourself it was an artifact, a calibration drift, the kind of ghost that instruments invent when they are bored. But Lano sat at the pavilion's open edge facing northeast, and her ears had been up since dawn.

"Vamos," she said, to no one in particular.

The Philosopher pulled his wagon to the doorway and stopped it there. "I want to note," he said, "that we are departing on the basis of a proposition that remains unverified. We are treating the signal as a claim. Claims require support."

"The support is that it's there," the Weather Reader said. He had his readings folded into a jacket pocket. "That's sufficient."

"It is not sufficient. That something exists does not mean it merits investigation."

"Tell that to the signal."

The Builder was already outside. We could hear her boots on the gravel, steady and unhurried, moving toward the settlement's northeast gate. Someone had to start walking. She started walking.

The Wireman lifted a coil of copper line from the storage bench and looped it over one shoulder without comment. The Student watched him do it and then reached for the secondary coil. The Listener had both hands occupied with the portable frequency rig, so the Dreamer carried his bag as well as her own and did not mention it.

At the radio station at the settlement's core, the Beacon Network Specialist's voice came through the handheld: "I've got you on relay. Signal's steady. I'll log every three hours."

"Understood," I said. And that was the handoff - not ceremony, just acknowledgment.

We walked through the gate eight people and a dog, and the road took us. The beacon pulsed twice behind us. The white crane was already ahead, circling once above the pavilion roof before angling northeast into clear air. It did not look back.

The Weather Reader fell in beside me. "The atmosphere is humming," he said. Not metaphor - his instruments confirmed it, a low resonance at a frequency that had no name in any catalogue he'd built over twelve years of reading weather. "Something is producing it. Not us."

The road was the road we'd all walked separately for years. The same gravel, the same grade, the same line of weathered posts. It looked different with eight sets of boots on it. It looked like it had been waiting.

Ideas (2)

  • Accumulated observation as methodology - let data gather without forcing narrative
  • Reduction over addition - consolidate existing material rather than generating more
