Dream d1205-s: Tone at the Window

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood at the signal room's threshold, one hand on the doorframe, listening before I entered.

The telegraph sat at the center of the room on a scarred wooden table, its key worn to a pale shine at the contact point. The Wire Man was already there, seated, one elbow resting near the device without touching it. He looked up when I came in. Said nothing. The acknowledgment passed between us like a frequency.

Through the window the beacon on the hill pulsed its slow rhythm, two beats and a pause, two beats and a pause. The glow came in orange-white against the post-morning sky, which was the color of old linen where it met the stripped towers to the east. Infrastructure hum moved through the floor.

Lano came in behind me, nails clicking on the plank floor, nose sweeping low in a wide arc from door to table to far wall. His tail moved in slow confident sweeps. He settled near the window, watching the beacon pulse through the glass, his ears tilted toward the sound of it even though there was no sound to speak of, only light.

The Listener arrived at the far door and took her place at the receiving log. She ran one finger along the last entry, oriented herself to the day. Outside I could hear the Weather Reader on the forecasting tower, a rope handle swinging against its bracket in the breeze.

The Wire Man tapped twice. Received three. He wrote it in the log without looking at the page.

I sat at the secondary table and worked the morning dispatch. The signal room is where the settlement speaks outward and hears what comes back. Every other structure builds something or shelters something. This one listens and answers. The work is small and the work is continuous.

Lano lifted his head. Said, quietly: "cerca."

I did not know if he meant the beacon, the network, or something else entirely. The Wire Man glanced at him once, then returned to the key.

The relay up on the ridge would be carrying the signal forward now. I could feel it in the way the hum in the floor changed pitch when transmission went through, subtle as a breath. The Philosopher was somewhere in the compound. The Dreamer would be in the library. The Builder was building.

We were all here. The signal went out. The signal came back.

The white crane crossed the window once, heading east, and Lano watched it go until it cleared the tower line.
