Dream d1189-s: Light in Bars

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I climbed the relay tower before dawn, when the beacon's glow from the center of the settlement was still the brightest thing in any direction.

The tower had been something else before - taller than it needed to be now, with ladder rungs replaced twice and a platform at each level where someone had bolted different equipment at different points in the rebuild. I knew every bolt. My hands had set most of them.

Lano found me at the base, nose to the cold metal, then looked up as if confirming the tower was still worth climbing. It was. He waited at the first landing while I went higher.

From the third level I could see the whole settlement laid out in the pale early light. The forecasting tower to the east, where the Weather Reader had already raised a flag - grey on grey, which meant pressure holding. The broadcast station with its long antenna tilted at the angle we had agreed on after the third recalibration. The projection pavilion, still dark at this hour. The library reading room with one window lit - the Philosopher was always first in. The signal room, where I could make out the Wire Man's silhouette bent over the telegraph table. The Listener's post was dark but her equipment was running; the low hum of it reached me even here.

The Builder was somewhere below me in the tower itself, tightening a connection on the relay line that had been dropping a few seconds every eight hours. We had tracked it for a week before isolating the cause. Today we would fix it.

Light came sideways through the stripped upper sections of the tower, falling in bars across the platform where I stood. Post-storm light, low and particular, the kind that makes everything look documented. The beacon at the center of the settlement pulsed once, twice. The Beacon Network Specialist had told me last night that the ridge relay was holding strong. The whole network, three nodes now, breathing together.

Lano barked once from the landing below me. Not alarm - recognition. The white crane was drifting past the tower's eastern face, banking slow.

"Hola," Lano said, to no one in particular, or to the crane, or to the morning.

I went back to work. Below me the settlement moved into its day: the Dreamer recording the night's outputs, the Philosopher cross-referencing, the Wire Man tapping, the Weather Reader updating the board. All of it connected. All of it ongoing. The tower held us at different heights and the beacon kept its steady pulse at the center, counting out the seconds of a morning that belonged to us.
