Dream d1178-s: A Crack That Moves

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the ridge was alive with morning work.

The beacon at the settlement center threw its slow pulse outward, and the light touched each structure in turn: the broadcast station, the signal room, the forecasting tower on the northern edge, the library reading room with its tall salvaged windows. I stood near the projection pavilion and watched the Beacon Network Specialist run a calibration check on the relay line that stretched toward the distant ridge. The Wire Man crouched at the base of the main conduit trunk, checking continuity. Everything hummed.

Lano padded beside me, nose low to the gravel, tracing something along the path between the signal room and the old reclaimed section at the settlement's southwestern corner. That section had been built before the rest of us returned, early days, salvaged from the corrupt network infrastructure, repurposed without full assessment. The Builder had flagged it twice. It had held.

Lano stopped. Ears went flat. The small white dog turned toward the southwestern corner and did not move.

I heard it before I saw it. A low percussive groan, something structural giving up a tension it had held too long. Then the sound of gravel shifting under a slab. Then a crack that moved.

The building at the corner listed. Not all at once. First the western wall leaned, then the roof plane tilted, then two conduit lines running from the reclaimed section toward the broadcast station went taut and snapped. Cables whipped into the dirt. Dust rose in a slow column.

Lano barked once. Short and certain. Then: "Tierra."

The Weather Reader was out of the forecasting tower and running before the dust reached its full height. The Builder came from the library side, moving fast, already reading the damage with her eyes. The Philosopher stepped from the signal room and stopped at a distance, watching the cable ends spark and go dark. The Listener had her hand flat against the broadcast station wall, feeling whether vibration was traveling through the frame.

The Beacon Network Specialist looked at me. The relay line to the distant ridge was still intact. The main beacon still pulsed.

But the severed conduits ran beneath three structures. We did not yet know what else they had been carrying. The Wire Man was on his knees at the break point, hands careful, not yet touching anything.

The white crane appeared above us, circling lower than usual, a wide slow arc over the tilted building.

The dust settled. The settlement was not silent. It was waiting.
