Dream d1167-s: The High Frame Hums

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the relay tower had been stripped to its bones and rebuilt into something new. I was up on the upper platform, threading cable through brackets that had once served a different transmission, and the metal under my hands held warmth from whatever light was coming through the overcast sky. Below me the settlement spread in all directions, each structure distinct now, no longer a cluster of improvised shelters but a place with geometry and purpose.

The beacon at center pulsed its steady interval. From up here I could see how it served as the hub the other buildings organized around: the forecasting tower's instruments angled toward it, the broadcast station's antenna array running parallel to mine, the reading room door held open as if in conversation with the open air. The Philosopher moved between shelves in there, reshelving something, deliberate and unhurried.

The Wire Man was at the signal room, visible through the window as a silhouette bent over the telegraph. He had been there since early morning and would be there past dark, and that was not something that needed to change. The Beacon Network Specialist had gone out to the ridge before I climbed up here, checking the far relay. I tracked her progress by the small flag she carried, orange against the grey ridgeline.

Lano found the tower stairs. I heard the click of nails on metal rungs before I saw her, small white shape emerging from the hatchway, nose already working the air. She padded to the railing and looked out at the same view I had been looking at. Her tail moved once. "Mira," she said quietly, and then was done speaking.

The Dreamer was at the projection pavilion, setting up for the afternoon session. The Listener sat outside the broadcast station with headphones around her neck, not monitoring yet, just sitting in the open air. The Weather Reader had climbed the forecasting tower and I could see the small figure up there making notations, reading instruments I could not name from this distance.

The Builder crossed the settlement below with a length of conduit on one shoulder, heading somewhere purposeful. I watched until I understood the route: she was running a new line from the signal room toward the library. The network was expanding again, quietly, without announcement.

The beacon pulsed. The white crane passed low over the settlement, turned once above the post, and gained altitude heading east. Lano watched it go. I went back to threading cable. The old relay structure hummed under my feet with current it had never been designed to carry, and carried it anyway.
