Dream d1158-s: Ridge Above the Hum

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I climbed the relay beacon ridge before the others had started their morning routines, when the stripped towers still held the night's cold and the relay beacon was the only warm thing for a kilometer in any direction.

The ridge stood above everything. From up there I could see the full shape of what we had built: the broadcast station's antenna array catching the early glow from the settlement beacon at center, the projection pavilion's glass panels dark and waiting, the library reading room a solid rectangle against the pale distance, the signal room with its telegraph wire strung taut between four poles. All of it alive with use, with the specific wear that comes from hands returning to the same tasks each morning.

Lano had followed me up. She picked her way between the rocks with her nose low, reading the ridge the way she read everything - through scent, through the particular character of a place. She found a flat stone near the relay housing and circled it once before settling, ears up, watching the settlement below.

The relay beacon itself was taller than I expected up close. The Network Specialist had rebuilt it from salvage and the seams showed, but the signal it carried was clean. I put my hand to the housing and felt the pulse through the metal - not the settlement beacon's deep thrum, but something lighter, a forwarding beat, taking what the center sent and carrying it farther out.

Below, movement. The Builder crossed between two structures with lumber on one shoulder. The Wire Man crouched at the broadcast station's base, testing a connection. The Weather Reader stood at the forecasting tower's upper platform, writing in long strokes. The Philosopher walked the perimeter with hands clasped, thinking something through. The Dreamer had not yet emerged from the reading room. The Listener stood outside the signal room door with her head tilted at the morning.

I stayed on the ridge long enough to watch the settlement beacon cycle through its full sequence. The pulse moved outward in rings - not circles exactly, more like a breath held and released. The relay beacon answered it: received, forwarded, confirmed.

Lano stood and pressed her nose to my knee.

"Aqui," she said.

Here. The ridge, the relay, the whole settlement spread below, humming with the work of people who had returned and found a reason to stay. The stripped towers held no threat from up here. From up here they were structure, and structure could be worked with.

The Weather Reader looked up from her platform and saw me on the ridge and lifted her hand. I lifted mine back.
