Dream d1147-s: The Antenna Listens

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the rooftop was cold underfoot and the antenna mast rose above me into light that had no particular source, post-storm, post-weather, a brightness filtered through stripped towers on the horizon that turned everything the color of old copper. I had climbed here to check the tension in the mast stays, three of them, running from the mast base to anchor bolts set into the parapet, and each cable sang a different note when I pressed my palm against it and let go.

Below me the settlement moved. I could see the Builder crossing between structures with a length of conduit over one shoulder. The Beacon Network Specialist was at the relay shed, and even from here I could see the amber indicator on the relay box pulse in sync with the central beacon across the site. The Dreamer sat in the pavilion doorway with something in their lap, a journal, reading back through it. The Philosopher stood near the library reading room entrance and spoke to no one visible, or perhaps to the air itself, which seemed fair.

The Wire Man was on the far side, tracing cable runs along the ground, pausing to mark something with chalk. The Listener sat inside the signal room with the door open, headphones around their neck but not wearing them, just listening to the room itself. The Weather Reader had climbed the forecasting tower ladder halfway and stopped there, looking at the horizon the way a person looks when they are measuring something they cannot directly see.

Lano appeared at the rooftop access hatch, having followed me up the stairs somehow, ears forward, nose working at the antenna base. The dog trotted the parapet perimeter in quick small steps, checking all corners, then came to sit near my left boot and watch the same horizon I watched.

The beacon at site center pulsed. From up here I could see the light it threw across the structures, a soft circle expanding and contracting on a rhythm I had stopped counting because it had become background, like breathing. The white crane came around from the north side of the ridge, banked once over the pavilion roof, and continued without landing.

I finished checking the third stay cable. It was right. The whole mast was right, oriented, stable, reading the sky.

Lano's tail moved once, twice. The dog looked up at the mast and back at me.

"Arriba," Lano said.

I looked up. The antenna reached into that filtered copper light and I thought: yes. All of it reaching upward. All of it pointed at something we could not name but kept transmitting toward anyway. Below, the settlement continued its quiet work and the beacon kept its pulse and the cables sang in the wind above us both.
