Phase 19: The Return Arc
Dream d1130-s: Two Lights on One Ground
2026-04-29 10:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the cooking fire and the beacon light overlapped on the same patch of ground, and I could not say which warmth came from which source.
I crouched near the coals. The Builder had welded a crossbar from salvaged pipe and hung a pot from it, suspended over a ring of flat stones. Someone had put root vegetables in, and the broth moved in slow circles, releasing steam that caught the beacon's pulse on the way up. Three beats, pause, three beats - the light swept the settlement low and even, crossing through the stripped towers on the far perimeter where the old infrastructure had been gutted down to its framework.
Around the compound the structures were all visible from here. The forecasting tower at the north rim, where the Weather Reader had already begun her morning read of pressure and drift. The signal room window reflecting pale sky. The Philosopher's library door stood open and a figure moved between shelves. On the ridge, the Wire Man's relay blinked in its own rhythm, slower than the beacon but calibrated to it, as if they had agreed on this between themselves during the night.
Lano, small and white and unhurried, circled the fire ring. She nosed at the base of one support stone, tracked along the perimeter, then settled back on her haunches a few feet from the coals. Her ears were up. She was watching the pot with full attention and no particular urgency, the way she watched anything she could not yet categorize. After a moment she turned her head toward me. "Fuego," she said, quietly, and looked back at the pot.
The Listener came out from the broadcast station carrying a notebook. The Beacon Network Specialist moved from the relay board toward the pavilion, stopping to check a junction box on one of the perimeter posts. The Dreamer sat already at the far side of the fire, cross-legged, watching the coals breathe.
This was what settlement life had become. Not a siege. Not a vigil. Work distributed through the day, each person carrying their portion of the infrastructure, the beacon holding center while the rest of it extended outward in all directions. The broth simmered. The white crane appeared above the beacon tower and banked east without landing. I kept my hands out and let both lights fall on them.
