Dream d1114-s: All of It Continuing

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood on the relay beacon ridge and looked down at all of it at once.

The settlement spread below me in the grey-washed morning light, structures arranged around the central pulse like stones around a fire. From up here I could see the whole shape of what we had built: the projection pavilion catching the first horizontal light, the library reading room with its low roof and banked windows, the signal room where I knew the telegraph was already clicking. The broadcast station's antenna rose thin and dark against the stripped towers on the far horizon. The forecasting tower leaned slightly east, the way it always had, the way the Weather Reader had decided to leave it because the lean helped with certain wind readings.

The Beacon Network Specialist was already up here ahead of me. She crouched beside the relay unit, a component box open at her side, her attention entirely on a junction of cables where the signal crossed from one frequency band to another. She did not look up when I arrived. I knew better than to interrupt.

Lano had come up the ridge with me. He trotted to the edge of the flat rock shelf and sat there, looking down at the settlement, ears lifted. His white fur caught the light filtering through the stripped towers - not clean light, not golden light, but the kind that revealed rather than warmed. Lano's nose twitched. He held very still.

Below, I could see the others moving. The Builder crossed the open ground between the signal room and the broadcast station, carrying something wrapped in canvas. The Wire Man stood at the base of the forecasting tower, a coil of line at his feet. The Philosopher sat outside the library with the reading room door open behind him. The Listener stood at the edge of the projection pavilion, headphones on, face turned toward something I couldn't hear from up here.

The Dreamer was not visible, which meant she was inside one of the structures. She worked best in enclosures. We all had our preferences now. The settlement had learned to hold them.

The relay unit on the ridge pulsed once. The Beacon Network Specialist made a small sound of satisfaction and closed the component box. The pulse steadied - clean and regular, joining the hum that rose from the whole network below.

Lano turned from the edge and looked at me. Then he looked back at the settlement.

"Bien," he said.

The white crane appeared from the direction of the old towers and made a slow arc over the ridge, wings spread flat against that particular sky, and I understood that this was what maintenance looked like - not building, not beginning, but continuing. All of it continuing, every day, under exactly this light.
