Dream d1112-s: Lean Hour at the Ridge

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the settlement woke before I did.

I came up from the signal room to find the Wire Man already at his terminals, finger moving along a line of tape. The quiet particular to early morning had shifted into something tighter. The generator was running, but its rhythm had changed - not louder, not slower, just altered. Something underneath the hum that made me stop in the doorway.

Lano was at the threshold, small and white, ears flat against her skull, nose working in short quick pulls. She looked at the generator housing, then at me. A single bark, low and deliberate.

The Wire Man said: the gauge dropped overnight. He said it the way people here say hard things - plain, with the rest of the work still ahead.

I stepped outside into that particular quality of light that comes through stripped towers and dispersed cloud. The beacon was pulsing its slow rhythm but the Builder stood at the fuel housing with a hand on the side panel, head bowed like someone listening. The Beacon Network Specialist was already on the ridge line with her kit, running a check - how long the relay could hold on auxiliary, what could be put into low-power state without losing the network.

The Philosopher and the Dreamer were at the reading room steps. The Philosopher had a ledger. The Dreamer was looking out past the forecasting tower toward the distance where the salvage runs used to end.

That's where I felt it fully. The materials we'd accumulated, the careful stacks in the back of the broadcast station, the reserve components the Wire Man had catalogued - all of it was running toward a margin we hadn't accounted for this soon.

The Listener came down from the forecasting tower. The signal from the eastern relay was steady, he said, but something on the lower bands. Movement. Could be salvage out there.

The Weather Reader said: conditions favor a run tomorrow. Two days before the front comes through.

Lano trotted to the edge of the settlement's cleared ground and stopped at the boundary where the built thing ended and the open distance began. She looked out. Her tail was still.

"Lejos," she said.

The Builder turned from the generator housing. The Beacon Network Specialist came down off the ridge. We stood at the edge of what we had built, looking at how far we would need to go.

The beacon pulsed. The gauge had not changed.
