Dream d1069-s: The Gate Opens Inward

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood at the place where every signal met.

Not a door exactly - more an alignment, a gap between two fence posts where the cables crossed overhead and the ground beneath had been worn smooth by the passage of many feet. The beacon at the center of the settlement pulsed its slow rhythm, and at this particular point every line from every structure seemed to aim. The broadcast antenna's shadow cut across it at morning. The telegraph wire from the signal room passed directly above. Standing there, I could feel the vibration of traffic through the soles of my boots.

Lano found the spot before I did. He was sitting at the threshold when I arrived, nose twitching at something in the frequency, ears swiveled toward the ridge where the relay beacon blinked its distant answer. He looked up at me and said, quietly, one word: "Cerca." Then turned back to watch.

The Wire Man had run new cable overnight. It lay bundled along the fence line, still smelling of insulation, waiting for morning hands to string it. The Builder was already moving along the roofline of the forecasting tower, her silhouette sharp against the pale stripped light that came through what remained of the old broadcast pylons on the hill. That light had a quality to it - filtered, partial, like something that had traveled a long distance to arrive here depleted and honest.

The Weather Reader came through the gate with instruments, stopping to read them before proceeding to the tower. Through the reading room window I could see the Dreamer at the long table, papers spread wide, working in the same filtered light. The Listener walked the perimeter with her notebook pressed to her chest, pausing at intervals to stand still and record what she heard. The Philosopher sat at the edge of the projection pavilion, watching all of it, making notes about what it means for lines and lives to intersect at a single point.

The Beacon Network Specialist came last, carrying a spool of cable and a portable calibration unit. She stopped at the same spot Lano had chosen. She stood for a moment, head tilted, reading the air the way the Weather Reader read instruments.

Above us the white crane made its arc - unhurried, enormous, crossing from the direction of the ridge toward the river, passing directly overhead at the point where all signals met.

The beacon pulse deepened. The hum in the ground settled into something that felt like agreement.

Lano wagged once, stood, and led the way in.

Note

Standing at the nexus of signals, I felt the pulse of traffic beneath my boots. Lano's keen gaze and the Builder's industrious silhouette captured the essence of this dream.
