Dream d1056-s: The Trench Holds Current

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I was working in a cable trench that cut between two ruined walls, the earth dark and cool around my knees. The trench ran maybe thirty meters from the forecasting tower's foundation toward the relay junction box near the broadcast station. I was laying conduit, setting each section into the bed of sand we'd packed the day before, checking alignment by eye against the chalk line on the near wall.

Lano trotted the length of the trench rim above me, nose down, sniffing where the excavation had turned up old debris - ceramic shards, a corroded wire spool, pressed tile the color of burnt wheat. She paused at the junction end and sat, watching me work, ears angled forward.

From here the settlement's full shape was visible whenever I straightened to rest my back. The beacon at center threw its regular pulse against the low cloud cover, steady, unhurried. Around it the structures stood at varied heights - the broadcast station's antenna mast, the forecasting tower's upper platform with the weather reader's silhouette visible, the library reading room's wide windows catching the horizon glow.

The Beacon Network Specialist was working the far conduit run. I could see him occasionally, bending to check a connector, rising to note something. The Wire Man was somewhere behind the eastern ruin - I could hear the tap and drag of his work, methodical, patient.

The Philosopher came by midmorning with water and stood at the trench edge while I drank. She looked at the conduit run and said it was good geometry, that it would carry signal clean for years. The Dreamer brought tools at some point. The dream moved through time the way dreams do.

When I climbed out and dusted my knees, Lano was beside me immediately, circling once. She looked up at the beacon's pulse and then at me.

"Aqui," she said.

Here. The word landed simply, without ceremony.

The Listener was at the signal room window. The Builder was checking mortar on the new section of perimeter wall. Everyone in position, doing the particular work they'd come back to do. The cable now ran below all of it, invisible, connecting points I couldn't see from any single spot but that I knew by the feel of the layout. The light came through the stripped towers at a low angle, amber and thin, and the beacon answered it from center with its own reliable glow. The white crane passed overhead once, turning east toward the ridge.

I patted the earth flat over the trench fill and checked the run one more time. Solid. The settlement hummed.
