Phase 19: The Return Arc
Dream d1008-s: Smoke at the First Relay
2026-04-20 16:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we were three days into the cable trench when the routing board failed.
The trench ran between two collapsed structures - old concrete, rebar showing through like exposed bone - and we had laid the conduit in sections, the Wire Man calling measurements to me while I positioned the saddle clamps. The signal room was taking shape above us: four walls of salvaged panel and reclaimed frame, the terminal bench bolted to the north wall, a row of relay housings mounted and ready to receive the boards he had carried in his cases from wherever he had been.
The Builder was in the trench checking terminations when it happened. A sharp smell first, then a curl of grey smoke rising from the junction box at the room's east-facing wall. The salvaged routing board, the one we had tested twice and trusted, had taken the load for maybe four hours before something inside it gave up completely.
We all stopped.
Lano was beside me at the trench lip and I felt the change in her before I heard the bark - one sharp sound, flat-eared, posture low and tight, her nose reading the air before any of us had moved. She stayed there watching the junction box, not settling.
The Wire Man was already up the ladder. He pulled the board free with his bare hands and set it on the bench and we stood over it in the late light. The beacon pulsed on the ridge. Nothing else moved.
No replacement existed. He said it plainly, without drama. The routing board was a specific generation of salvage, the kind you found once if you were fortunate, and this one had given what it could and was now beyond recovery.
The Philosopher appeared at the doorway of the signal room, said nothing, looked at the board and then at the beacon and then at the Wire Man.
The Builder came up from the trench, wiping her hands on her jacket, and examined the housing where the board had sat. She began to speak - measurements, component alternatives, a configuration she had seen used in a different context, entirely improvised. The Wire Man listened. He disagreed on one point. They talked it through.
I stood at the bench and watched them work through the problem with no urgency and no panic, only the close attention of people who have solved things before and know that this is also solvable, probably, if you remain precise.
Lano stayed at the trench lip until full dark.
"Mira," she said once, quietly, to no one.
The beacon kept its pulse on the ridge. The signal room had no signal yet. We closed the housing and marked it and agreed to sleep on the problem, and I did not know when I lay down whether we would solve it.
